1. Organic Grapefruit Seed Extract.
A gel like substance is removed from the seeds and becomes the grapefruit seed extract. At this stage the substance is pure gel with no anti-microbial actions. However this gel does have antioxidant actions.
2. Antioxidant.
Fresh fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, and grapefruits are no exception. Their pulp and seeds are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants cannot kill microbes ie bacteria, fungi or virus. In the body antioxidants stop things from oxidising by removing potentially damaging oxidising agents.
3. Blends of grapefruit seed extract made to kill microbes can never be classed as organic.
This is because of the chemical these manufactured products contain – benzalkonium chloride
Benzalkomium chloride is a chemical found in many products from kitchen cleaners to eye drops. It is used for its anti-microbial properties and is used as a preservative.
Benzalkomium chloride has been found to cause inflammation in the eye. The eye inflammation stopped when the eye drops were stopped.
4. Organic grapefruit seed extract
Ascorbic acid is added to the organic grapefruit seed extract to improve its keeping properties and sold as an antioxidant only.
5. Grapefruit seed extract blends made to ingest to kill microbes never goes off and keeps for years.
I asked a Health Company (who proudly reported their natural product for killing germs) how long this product would keep? They said: ‘Oh don’t worry! It will keep for years!’
