Stefan Gates author of the book E Numbers suggests on the TV programme The Wright Stuff this morning that E Numbers or Additives are mostly OK because they are found naturally in food.

However by suggesting this he is not understanding Science.  All chemicals are found in food, earth, wild life, water and air.

They become the nasty chemicals, that should be called Synthetic Chemicals, when a component of the foodstuff, or earth, or wild life, or water, or air is separated from all the other components it was born with and this Synthetic Chemical enters our bodies alone without its proper counterparts and has the potential to cause imbalances throughout the body as the body works out how to process and assimilate the unnatural substance.

Stefan Gates infers that the additive Ascorbic Acid is Vitamin C and therefore natural.
